Parkinson’s is the most common neurological condition in the world and there is currently no cure and no medication that can slow progression – ONLY EXERCISE CAN! But it must be the right kind of exercise and the right dose.

There is currently a huge shortage of qualified PT’s to work with and support People with Parkinson’s.

To join you will need :

  • Current CIMSPA membership at Level 3 or 4 as a Personal Trainer or Exercise Referral Practitioner (or equivalent).
  • At least 3 years post qualification experience including working one-to-one with clients.
  • Liability insurance.
  • An understanding of special population training.
  • A Parkinson’s Specific qualification – below is a list of recognised qualifications. If you are not yet qualified, on joining you receive free FitPro membership and 15% off the Neurotrainer – Parkinson’s course.

Our Qualification and Guidance

Delivering personal training to people with medical conditions offers a hugely rewarding, but also potentially complex element to your career. It is vital that you have the right training, qualification and guidance in place.

Our training and guidance has four elements:

1. FitPro Neurotrainer – Parkinson’s Course

Neurotrainer – Parkinson’s is a course to support the growing emphasis on neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to make new neural pathways given the right stimulus). Trained exercise professionals can now play a key role in helping people with Parkinson’s to effectively manage their condition and maximise their quality of life. On completion of this course, students will be able to work with people with early to mid stage Parkinson’s in a one-to-one or small group setting.

One of the most comprehensive and in depth courses available to fitness professionals, this course is available at a reduced cost to NRPSPT members, together with free FitPro Core membership.

(If you have completed any of the following qualifications you won’t need to complete this element: Wright Foundation – Exercise for Long Term Neurological Conditions, PD Warrior, LSVT Big, PWR for Parkinson’s, RYP – Parkinson’s Pro, Medfit – Parkinson’s Fitness Specialist)

2. The 4D Life Programme

This evidence based online programme has been created by a team including fitness professionals with 50 years combined experience, a Band 7 Neurological Physiotherapist and a Registered dietitian.

NRPSPT members have free access to the programme, allowing them to use it to guide their work with people with Parkinson’s. The programme is split into four dimensions: movement, nutrition, function and lifestyle. It covers almost every element of managing Parkinson’s alongside medication.

3. NRPSPT Induction and Operations Manual

These induction videos and manual cover the important elements of delivering personal training to people with medical conditions and Parkinson’s specifically.
